How Reliable Is Your Data Centre Server?

In 1982, in the early days of the telecom industry, I sat at a teletype in an office in Indianapolis and programmed a PBX in Columbus, Ohio, over the phone lines, at 300 baud (a recent upgrade from 110, by the way). I’d type a three digit code then several seconds later the system would prompt me for the next code. (For you youngsters out there, 300 baud: 300 bits per second, which is equivalent to 37.5 characters per second, or 6.8 words per second. A 10,000 word file would crawl across the phone lines in 1,470 seconds, or 24.5 minutes! Forget about graphics or video). So maybe it took us all day to program a couple hundred phones, we were just happy to not have to travel to Ohio. It was amazing and fantastic!

Cat 6 is similar to Cat 5e but is designed with even stricter standards. Cat 6 is backward compatible with Cat 5/Cat 5e. Cat 6 has a standard performance of 250 MHz and works with both 1000BASE-T and 10BASE-T / 100BASE-TX. It also works with 10GBASE-T standard, but there are limits if Cat 6 unshielded cable is used. Like earlier Cat 5e/ Cat 5, Cat 6 contains four twisted copper wire pairs. The cable is made usually with 22 to 24 AWG gauge wire. Cat 6, when used in a patch cable function, is often terminated with a RJ-45 connection.

Step 4- In the second case, that is if your cable does not have the small string- then you have to make the small cut in jacket (as we explained earlier). Then you must pull apart the wires and the jacket. This must be done very gently, by taking the wires together in one hand and the jacket in the other.

Another thing to consider is whether or not you are an entrance facility or a facility with equipment rooms. An entrance facility interfaces with the world around it. However, a facility with equipment rooms is supporting users within a building. There are also telecommunications rooms and the equipment kept in these rooms connects what is called backbone cabling systems and horizontal cabling systems. Backbone cabling systems connect all the types of facilities including equipment rooms, entrance facilities and telecommunications rooms. Horizontal cabling systems connect telecommunications rooms to outlets on different floors.

In addition to have a good a voicemail system and enough lines coming in and going out, you need to have a reliable system in place to begin with. You can’t manage your business effectively if you have system that fails you on occasion. You need to know that your system is reliable. You also want to make sure that your system will function properly for transfers and holds. There is nothing worse than a system that does not seem to handle a transferred call well. While some may say that failed transfers are human error, and some may be, if you look into it further many times it is the system itself failing.
